If I purchase a new 603 motor, my machine shop told me that I would need have it torn apart and everything checked. Since I am new to this, is this would pretty much everybody does?

Did he tell you why it has to be torn down?
Does he just want to make sure it has all the correct bearing clearances, and the balance is okay? Those are valid reasons. You have to ask questions.
