Need some advice on building my 350 for the upcoming season.  Pure stock class, 18in vaccum, u know suppose to be stock.  So what i want to do is to take my running 350, put a different cam in it nothing crazy above stock. new z28 valve springs. lifters, and timing chain. Basically leaving the whole bottom end alone. So question is would that cause me not to be competitive. Does new rings and bearing make that big of difference.  dont get me wrong i know its better to do so the motor last longer and etc...  I only want to run mid pack not looking to win track championship.  First time racing and  i want to mmake it to the track on a controlled budget.Input needed

it would indeed be better to put new rings and bearings in the bottom end.  it would also be a wise investment to purchase and install some quality rod bolts.  factory rod bolts and bearing were never designed for consistent high rpm or the tortional pressures of racing.  you can get rebuild kits through speedway or p.a.w. and many other companies at really reasonable costs that will make your otherwise stock engine become a durable race engine.  if it is in your budget, a good valve job and maybe getting a few thousands cut off the heads will increase the power with no infringement of the rules.
