I just built a 112" pontiac, 3160# (without driver) Pure Stock.  I run it on a 1/2 mile asphalt track, with light banking.  Turns 1 and 2 are a little more sweeping, 3 and 4 a little tighter.  It has the Pontiac 350 with decent heads and the good 2bbl intake, and a good 2bbl rochester carb. (rules)
I wasn't certain what to do with a tranny, but ended up using the stock TH350.  I had a tranny shop rebuild it with a full race kit ($200), and I put in a TCI 10" fast lap converter (242125) and using TCI circle track oil.  I'm only running the radiator tranny cooler, not a seperate one, and so far temps are ok.
I've only run two races, but it hooks up just as well.  In fact, I think it's better because it's like rolling on the throttle, and less likely to break loose with a clutch.
I'm not sure if it's heavier, but I think it is by 20-30#.

In hindsite, I would have put in cheaper (yet good synthetic) tranny fluid, run lots of practice laps, then dump it and then put in the good stuff.  Seem to always get stuff out after a rebuild.
