97 cavalier not turning over

a friend of mind gave me his charger car because he was leaving for the marines. he said it just needed a fuel pump because the fuel pump never came on. we put a new fuel pump on and it still wont turn over. the engine cranks put wont turn over. we can get it running off ether  a couple secounds. Me and my whole crew are stumped on this. im open to anything. i need some help diagnosing this problem.  

Hope this isn't too little too late but I had the same problem on my 98 cav. Chevy grounds the fuel pump way back at the tailights. If you cut the tailight harness you cut the ground to the pump. If you locate the fuel pump harnees inside the car in the center of the rear seat area seperate it and find the small black wire. Ground that wire and it should start right up.

reared its ugly head.to reset unhook bat. for about 10 min. hook bat. back up, turn key on/off/on, watch for security light to flash when light flashes turn switch off and right back on and try to start. engine should  
start. if not go thru prosess again i've gone thru
this 5 or 10 times before security system resets.
