Camshaft Timing Problems

Is it possible to retard camshaft timing so much (by mistake) that the engine will not make power, or run cool…unless full advance on crank pulley is about 60 degrees?  

No not really,,  if it was out way to far it wouldn't start!  Are u sure your harmonic balancer hasn't slipped!! The outer ring can slip giving u false readings or u could have the wrong one on it, simple way to check this is:  look at the key way on a sbc balancer I assuming ur running chevy?  But if u run the 6 1/4 balancer then the tdc mark will be straight up from the crank keyway, on a 8" balancer the tdc mark will be about 4-5 degrees off to the left of the crank keyway!  If isn't either of the two get a new harmonic balancer!,  I run a sbc with 8 degrees retard camshaft and 34 degrees ign timing and it's a monster!  If u are using a 3 key way timing crank gear set u can put it were u want it for your performance requirement. The retard keyway gives higher rpm power while the advance keyway give low end torque gain!  Some crank sprokets u have to watch how u line up your marks!  It won't be dot to dot it will be cam dot to proper crank mark  so in that case yeah it might be if installed incorrectly!

I agree with eric77. If you were that far out it would not start and or you probably would have some damaged valves from contacting the pistons.  30 degrees is quite a bit to be out.
