I know it's pretty basic, buy I've never had to do it. How do you lock the advance on HEI distributor?

I Know of a couple ways... But the easiest is with a cheap kit. I will have to hunt but I found them for under 20 bucks for both advances! The other way is to weld it. You need to find a shop that has done it or atleast take off the springs and weights. Pull the 2 post for the springs close together and tack it. I will reply back with links for the kits.

I tack mine but you need to turn the engine over before you hit the power button. If it is advanced to say 36 degrees, it will not turn over worth a dam unless you set it up to spin before you hit the ignition switch!

I reccomend using a advance cure kit insteaad. They are under $10
Locking the distributor makes starting easier and will conserver battery power, to give a hotter spark lol.
Use the lightest springs available to make the dist. advance as soon as possible. This will give you the best of both worlds.

hmm... locked timing on an HEI.. i know this is an older post..
i wonder if ford blue grommet modules are legal with an hei???
one could wire up a terminal block for the pickup coil to hook to.. and wires to the ford module.. the blue ford module has a 10 degree retard when the white wire gets power.. it is used as a starting retard.. the red wire is power ..
the pick up coil phasing needs to be checked with this set up... or it may fire the coil with the rotor between the cap terminals...
this would also make it easy to wire in 2 modules with a switch between them .. a triple pole single throw switch.. (ON-ON) or a triple pole double throw switch.. (ON- OFF-ON) so you could have a place to kill the ignition system if you felt the need.. warning.. some of the 3PDT switches have a ratchet type throw.. so you have to stop at the center position first..
again.. just a thought..
just have to remember.. the ford module has to be grounded to the same screw that holds down the 3 wires to the cap.. the center is the ground for the coil primary..
