I am putting a powerglide in my modified and there is a 3/8 inch gap between the converter and flywheel. Is it ok to pull the converter out that much or do I need to shim in between them?

I'm guessing since its a mod your running a mid plate? If you are yes you need a shim. The extra distance will put too much strain on your flywheel and the input shafts of the trans! If your not running a mid plate or mid mounts, there may be a larger issue.

why are you running a tc in your power glied and not a direct drive and a dump valve
but yes you need to buy the 3/8th shim and bolt it between the crank and flywheel

put some fluid in the convertor for lubrication. A little vaseline on the neck for seal lubrication. install the convertor with the two cuts in the neck aimed out to the sides. Not up and down. They can dig into the bearing and score it. wiggle the convertor into place. Then spin it until you hear it lock 3 times. Each time it clicks it should move into the tranny a little further. When it spins without going any further in tranny it's set into place. When you bolt tranny to the motor make sure you have about 3/8" clearance between convertor and ring gear. Bolt it to ring gear.
