a local engine builder and myself are starting to put a 383 crank in a 305. this should be a 331 or 335. our local rule book says we whould weigh 9 lb per cubic inch with a 3000lb min. hasanyone tried this combo and how well did it work. on paper and in thearoy this should be a high tourqu motor whitch fits my driving style verry well.
i am just looking for imput on how people like this setup

Well your in luck as I have built one of those...but it may be bad luck! I built one for a street car, a 87 camaro with a 4-speed. The 383 crank is actually just a 400 crank but try to get one thats internally balanced. As far as the engine performance it was like you said very linear torque curve. That thing made power everywhere!! It wasn't crazy power but it was there completely through the rpms. I used a set of 186 heads and the cam was very special. The cam was the fabled 302 cam that was supplied to the racers under the table in 1969, the solid lift gm. The intake was a cheap performer, with a 600 holley. I will build one again for another street car as I sold that one to a guy to drop in a toyota 4wd! I loved it... at one point it picked up the front wheels on the camaro!!
