My dad recently purchased a pure stock 1985 chevy monte carlo. It came with some rear end problems. Im pretty new to this, but when you look under the car from the front of the rear axle all you see is the two seperate shafts coming in and ending, everything else is missing (Pumpkin?). Also, when we took the rear wheels off the brakes on both sides were full of grease, perhaps a blown seal? What do we need to do to fix this, and what all do we need to buy to put the rear end back together?
Thanks a lot!

It sounds like you are indeed missing the 3rd member. What you need to do is: count how many splines are on the axles currently. go to a junkyard, and find a pumpkin out of a ford 9 inch which uses axles with the same spline count. Maybe bring you axle with to be sure. -Take it home, tear it down, clean it up, get a set of gears of the proper ratio, a full spool if allowed, and a rebuild kit, and have a professional set the ring and pinion up. - bolt it in, fill it with oil, and go racing!
As for your brakes, it depends on the bearing type you have. Its easy to replace the seal with some bearing styles, others require pressing the bearing off, which usually destroys it.
One solution is to goto summit racing, and check out this part number: SIT-EAS1-05 If it is the wrong diameter for the axle tube, search for axle seals, look around till you find a similar part with the right diameter.
