I,m a mini stock racing in Central Oregon on a 1/4 mile dirt track. I run a 2300 Pinto w/ 4spd Pinto tranny. My question is this... With 4:11 gears (8" Ford),2nd gear over runs the cam @ 7300 rpms and 3rd gear comes on at the end of the straight chute upon entering the turn. Do i advance the cam and retard the timing , or change the rear end gears? The cam is a Racer Walsh roller w/ Hyd. lifters, with a 5200 to 7200 rpm range. Atop is a Holley 500 2 brl. carb ,& header. someone got help??

try setting your timing about 36deg advanced, retard the cam 2 deg that will give you more out of the corner. for some reason we find advancing the cam makes it come on strong at the end of the straight.

I think you have one of the gears that got put out with the advanced and retard on the wrong side of the gear . There were quite a few. You advance to bring the rpm range down for off the corner power. When you retard it, it will give you top end power for the end of the straights . Again there were a lot of them put out there with cheap prices to unload them . You might check that. Good luck,
Joe

What 2nd gear are you using, if it is a 214 with a 411, you are runnig an 880 final, with a tire run out, assuming 13" approx 71--73 in run out, you are cutting a pretty strong gear. but for 1/4 it would be quick. What peak rpm are you turning in second..the stock 2300 properly preped with good bolts on the rods will turn 75 to 78 all day. by properly preped, I mean balanced good bolts, and good clearances in bearings and pistons.. The walsh cam even tho it is rated 52 to 72, will work at those rpms..If you are doing 73 I would not worry about it. However, JOe is right about the advance / retard..Advance for more off, retard for longer legs. I run mine pretty much straight up on 1/3, and advance for shorter track quickness about 2. Now if you are floating at 73 to 75, straight up, then retard a little to delay the come on so you do not over run the rev. 1 to 2 degrees should be ok..I would play with it till I got what I wanted. It might be ok, right where it is....good luck dr6
